Life as a Second-class Citizen

secondclass

When I was younger, the scenes of the killing of the Ahwaris by the Iranian border guards as they approached the dam in Hor Hawiza accompanied me like nightmares, every news of the killing of a young man made me full of anger and grief over the injustice that is inflicting us.

The territorial dam between the two countries divides the borders in Hawiza Marsh into two parts, the eastern side of Maysan province and the other part southwest of Ahwaz “Khuzestan province", which was completed in 2004 on the borderline separating Iraq and Iran.

Three years ago, before Hawiza Marsh was dried, my friend and I were hunting in the upper areas of Hawiza Marsh, where my family was preventing us from into it for fear of approaching the border with our boat, but one night, we decided to go to that occupied area because of the shyness we were feeling from the young people in our village in the marshes who described us as cowards, and because fishing was available in that area of Hawiza, which encouraged us to go there, and which was about 10 kilometers from our old fishing place, once we arrived, in the early hours of the night, we hid among the reeds, about 500 meters from the earth dam, where the first thing I saw was Iranian border guards walking around with their cars, guard poles, barbed wire along the dam and light poles equipped with thermal cameras.

We started to prepare fishing equipment, where we used an Indigenous Ahwari method of fishing, which required putting a light at the front of the boat to help us see the fish, and we used the spear, The name of this fishing method is "Saraj", and the spear is called "fala", we were only in the first minutes of fishing, and shots began in all directions, I saw everyone rushing to hide in the middle of reed forests, This was happening daily to them, The majority of them were pierced by the sniper on the dirt dam again and again. The other young people rushed to rescue, and save part of the fishing equipment, The boat may sink and stay forever, At that time, Kazem, one of our village neighbors, was hit by a bullet in the hip area. He was bleeding heavily, we linked the site of the injury and we went back, but the house was 30 kilometers away from us, the hospital was more than 80 kilometers away, as soon as we reached the village, Kazem died in the middle of the boat, Kazem was one of the people in the list of young Ahwaris who were killed, which I do not have an approximate number, because as an indigenous people we die and do not become a national tragedy only because we are from this land.

Every time, silence and disregard are deliberately for the permanent promotion of the idea that it is an international border and what happened of killing is legal, so that I have even overtaken this trick until recently, and now that I have grown up and lived this experience, the experience of terror and death is certain only because we are hunting in our historical homeland, the Iraqi government imposes its racist policies, and prevents us from living in our land, where we are required to renew a permit to enter our homeland every six months and make room for oil companies to destroy our land, we are asked for permits, cards and registration numbers, all of which restrict our movement and living on a daily basis, we are killed in our own land, we are prevented from moving freely in our land, we are prevented from living in dignity, We are prevented from earning our livelihood, we are prevented from hunting in our land, on the side of the Iraqi government, which considers us residents of a second class and underestimating our right, and from the Iranian side who do the same to our people in the eastearn Ahwar, killing us, persecuting us, east and west, between the borders that is divided by the colonizers.

Our people have always been a victim of discrimination in schools and exploitation in the labor market, and our lands are robbed through unfair agreements. The Iraqi government continues to deny our right as an indigenous people to live and to manage our indigenous lands, and often adopts exploitative policies to extract land belonging to us for centuries. In some cases, the government has adopted a policy of integration and coercion to erase our culture and traditions, in a province like Maysan, I cannot buy a piece of land in the city center because the owner of the real estate office after he hears you speak in a strong accent, he will refuse to sell you a piece of land even if you pay twice as much because it compares that to violence and tribal conflict, except In case you speak in a more centralized dialect, in most cases the name of the tribe and the original residence will be asked to discover your identity that will affect the completion of the purchase transaction.

Despite the many conferences and seminars held to defend the people of Ahwar, this solidarity is mostly not for us, and the marshes have become material for making and laundering money, every time I try to find information about our cause, I hear the unrealistic speech of these organizations and far from the right of our Ahwari people to live in freedom and dignity, These organizations began to exploit Ahwar in all ways، For example, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 2022 allocated more than 21 million dollars to support buffalo breeders, and distributed several bags to some buffalo breeders in Chibayish, and their number does not exceed the fingers of one hand. And this amount that was distributed was not enough for breeders for one day, and then it turned out that they were all corrupt and thrown into the river by buffalo breeders.

According to FAO, the amount of feed it distributed amounted to 3,000 tons (1000 tons of bran - 1000 tons of hay - 1000 tons of yellow corn silage) distributed to 5,000 buffalo breeders, in addition to 3,000 tons of sugar molasses distributed to 10,000 breeders, the buffalo breeders project in the south, which includes 3 governorates: Basra, Dhi Qar, and Maysan, to help buffalo breeders alleviate their suffering from drought and high feed prices, and the value of the project is 21 million dollars.

Most of the buffalo breeders in Dhi Qar did not receive feed or molasses, and these numbers are in Dhi Qar alone, knowing that there are villages for buffalo breeders in the marshes of Hawiza and the rest of the Marshes of Maysan, and they did not include in the funds allocated to buffalo breeders in Maysan, and there are 3 areas in which fodder was distributed by 6 bags of fodder, knowing that the amount allocated to support buffalo breeders in Maysan is 7 million dollars.

our people do not particularly in practice have minimal rights, To this day, we have faced many dangers that are threatening our existence, as an effect of unjust and racist government approaches and practices, such as many countries, our position as indigenous peoples on development indicators indicates the extent of the deterioration of our situation compared to other groups in the countries in which we live, such as the numbers of prisoners, rates of violence, suicide and tribal conflict, all of which is killing our society and benefit politicians in their political campaigns motivated by anti-immigrant propaganda and hate against minorities.
